Facultative photosynthtic bacteria for waste water purification

This research activity taks advantage of facultative photosynthetic bacteria that are electrochemically controlled in order to force them perform photosynthesis, even in presence of relevant O2 tension. Such an approach tends to optimize bacteria’s ability to use contaminant organic carbon found in industrial waste water to sustain their metabolism. The results consist in a more effective removal of organic carbon from waste water wrt the case when these bacteria take advantage of respiration to perform their metabolic steps.
